In the precious jewel-box of the Teatro Bibiena, the Quintet in F minor by César Franck resounds—one of the monuments of French Romantic chamber music—performed this afternoon by a group of young musicians of international standing.

Composed between 1878 and 1879, at the height of his most fertile creative period, this work is permeated by a harmonic fever manifested in constant tonal instability—a tension that never fully resolves, flowing through the three movements like a subterranean energy.

Of almost symphonic proportions, the Quintet unfolds with vivid and energetic writing, dense and elaborated in its development. The central movement, Lento con molto sentimento, is filled with absorbed poetry and stands as the emotional core of the entire composition, before the finale bursts into a passionate and feverish Allegro.

A work that overwhelms, that leaves no respite, and that finds a particularly striking resonance in the intimate space of the Bibiena Theatre.
