Trio for clarinet, cello and piano in A minor op. 114
25’ | Admission €10
The encounter between the clarinet of Gabriele Mirabassi and the Ensemble Kinari gives life to one of the most intimate and restrained pages of Johannes Brahms’s late musical language.
The Trio on today’s programme was written in the final years of the composer’s life, when Brahms had already announced his farewell to symphonic and chamber writing. Yet he was deeply struck by the sound of clarinettist Richard Mühlfeld, which led him to return to composition, giving rise to a group of late works among the highest in his output. In this context unfolds a music of extraordinary expressive maturity, marked by a warm, meditative, and profoundly human tone. The dialogue between clarinet, cello, and piano develops as a continuous conversation, built on mutual listening and subtle resonances: rather than conflict or tension, a confidential, almost domestic dimension prevails, in which each voice finds space without ever overpowering the others.
Thanks to the interpretative sensitivity of these young musicians, the Trio becomes a sonic organism of rare cohesion: a writing that seeks not outward virtuosity, but the depth of gesture and the transparency of musical thought. The result is a listening experience that is both intimate and luminous, capable of conveying the quiet strength of this refined and pacified music.
