At the Teatro Bibiena — also renowned for having hosted a concert by the young Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart in 1770 — the newly formed String Trio Eszkà will delight audiences with the Divertimento in E-flat major, the only work Mozart ever composed for string trio.
Written in 1788 and dedicated to his friend Michael Puchberg, the “Gran Trio” belongs to a particularly intense phase of Mozart’s creative output and stands out for its breadth and complexity. The opening Allegro begins with a restrained unison, from which a dense web of imitation unfolds among the three instruments, featuring modulatory episodes and passages of almost fugal writing. The Adagio, by contrast, introduces a suspended atmosphere sustained by finely ornamented counterpoint. The two Menuetti retain their characteristic dance-like quality and elegance, though they are less elaborate than the other movements. At the centre of the work lies the Andante con variazioni, built on a simple theme that undergoes a progressive transformation, culminating in the final variation, where the viola assumes a structurally prominent role. The concluding Allegro, in rondo form, alternates episodes of lively brilliance with imitative passages.
Particularly striking is the balance among the three instruments, treated in a fully equal manner. The continuous dialogue between violin, viola, and cello weaves a texture that is both transparent and rich in detail. What emerges is music capable of moving coherently between tension and release, while always maintaining a remarkable unity of language.
