Concerto per pianoforte n. 2 in do minore, op. 18

David Kadouch, named Young Artist of the Year at the International Classical Music Awards in 2011, makes his debut at Trame Sonore, performing one of the most beloved piano concertos in the Romantic repertoire. Under the direction of Lucie Leguay, one of the brightest conductors of the new generation—who has already led the OCM in a previous edition—Sergej Rachmaninov’s Piano Concerto No. 2 in C minor, Op. 18 is brought to life in all its expressive power by the Orchestra da Camera di Mantova.
Composed between 1900 and 1901, the concerto was born after a period of creative crisis experienced by the composer, which he overcame thanks to an unusual course of hypnosis conducted by Dr. Nikolai Dahl. Dedicated to him, the work opens with chords of rare solemnity and unfolds into a visionary and overwhelming lyricism. The second movement contains one of the most beautiful melodies ever written by the composer, while the finale bursts forth with Rachmaninov’s characteristic energy and brilliance.
A work that itself seems to hypnotize, combining virtuosity and emotional depth in an unparalleled way—an ideal opening event for this fourteenth edition.
