After consolidating its position among the most interesting emerging ensembles on the European scene, the Ineo Quartet returns to the stage of Trame Sonore.
The programme opens with Haydn’s String Quartet No. 39 in C major op. 33 no. 3, “Der Vogel” (The Bird), composed in 1781 and belonging to the set of quartets the composer himself described as “new and special,” aware of having redefined the rules of the genre. The emancipation of viola and cello contributes to a more balanced and modern writing, making the quartet one of the most democratic forms of chamber music. The nickname “The Bird” comes from the ornaments, trills, and melodic play of the violins, evoking a light and natural dialogue in a spirit of Enlightenment grace, measure, and subtle Viennese humour. In sharp contrast, Elizabeth Maconchy’s Quartet builds an intense dialogue in a single movement, dense with nervous energy and chromaticism, like a tight confrontation between four individual voices.
In the historic setting of the Museo Virgilio, the dialogue between these two eras becomes a tribute to poetry and to the origins of our culture.
