Alfred Brendel studied piano and composition in Zagreb and Graz, completing his studies with Edwin Fischer, Paul Baumgartner and Eduard Steuermann. During the sixty years of his illustrious international career he has been a protagonist on the scene of the most important musical centers and festivals in the world with the main orchestras and conductors, and his vast discography has contributed to making him one of the most respected artists of our time. Two collections comprise most of his recordings: “The Complete Vox: Turnabout and Vanguard Solo Recordings” (2008) with 35 CDs and “The Complete Philips recordings” (2015) with 114 CDs, including several live performances.
He has received 20 honorary degrees from universities such as Oxford, Cambridge, Yale and McGill and a number of prestigious awards such as honorary membership of the Vienna Philharmonic, the Sonning and Siemens awards and the Praemium Imperiale in Japan.
Alfred Brendel’s numerous essays and poems have been widely published in many languages. Bärenreiter recently edited his interpreting conversations with Peter Gülke.
Ended his concert career in 2008, Alfred Brendel continues his activity with lectures (recorded by Unitel and Supraphon), lectures and chamber music masterclasses. He is also enthusiastically dedicated to sharing his experience as a musician with artists of the younger generations.
