Vox Musica Vocal & Instrumental Ensemble

Vox Musica Vocal Ensemble is a vocal ensemble based in London composed of 14 singers, with a repertoire spanning from the 16th to the 21st century. The group has a particular focus on Baroque music and often performs, as in Mantua, with specialist musicians drawn from leading London ensembles.

The ensemble regularly appears at the London Handel Festival, performing works by Handel, Bach, Vivaldi, and Zelenka, and has also explored French court music, particularly composers such as Rameau, Mondonville, and Delalande. Vox Musica also takes part annually in the Anghiari Festival in Tuscany together with the Southbank Sinfonia of London, where it has performed Mozart’s Requiem, Bach’s Magnificat, and—by contrast—Romantic repertoire by Mendelssohn and Brahms. Previous appearances at Trame Sonore have focused on composers such as Monteverdi and Purcell.

The singers regularly collaborate with other well-known ensembles, and many are active as soloists, performing worldwide and participating in numerous recordings.

The ensemble members include Margaret Lingas, Alice Beverley, and Clover Willis (soprano); Daniel Gethin, Lorna Perry, and Katharine Verney (alto); William Wright, Adam Berman, and Keith Parker (tenor); Edward Saddington, Basil McDonald, and Simon Littlewood (bass). Instrumental collaborators include Kinga Ujszászi and Maria Ines Zanovello (violin), Jordan Potter and Elena Accogli (viola), Reiko Ichise (viola da gamba), Helen Verney (cello), Nicola Barbagli (oboe and recorder), Jadran Duncumb (theorbo), and Silas Wollston (organ).

Michael Berman is the musical director of Vox Musica Vocal Ensemble and founder of the Southbank Sinfonia (now Sinfonia Smith Square), which offers an annual intensive programme of performance and professional development for young musicians as a bridge into professional life. He has a strong focus on Baroque music, which forms a significant part of the ensemble’s repertoire, and was appointed CBE in 2013.
