Pietro Mianiti is Principal Conductor of the Orchestra of the Accademia del Teatro alla Scala and Professor of Viola at the “Giuseppe Verdi” Conservatory of Music in Milan. After many years as principal viola in leading Italian opera and symphonic orchestras, he made his conducting debut in 1998, leading the world premiere of Il Filo by Michele Dall’Ongaro, directed by Daniele Abbado at the Teatro Rendano in Cosenza.

He is the founder of the Italian Piano Quartet, with which he has performed in major concert seasons and festivals, including the Festival dei Due Mondi in Spoleto, the Lygon Melbourne Arts Festival, and in venues such as Carnegie Hall in New York, the Kleine Musikhalle in Hamburg, the Philharmonic Hall in Saint Petersburg, and the Dixon Gallery in Memphis. From 1999 to 2003, at the invitation of Luigi Alva, he served as Music Director of the Teatro Segura in Lima, where he conducted Turandot, Tosca, Falstaff, The Barber of Seville, Aida, Rigoletto, Gianni Schicchi, Verdi’s Messa da Requiem, Puccini’s Messa di Gloria, and Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony.

He later served as Artistic Advisor of the Teatro Massimo in Palermo, where he conducted Carmen, and as Music Director of the Orchestra of Roma Tre University (2005–2011).

For As.Li.Co he conducted L’Elisir d’Amore (2004), I Capuleti e i Montecchi (2005), Madama Butterfly (2007), Turandot(2008), La Traviata (2010), and Un Ballo in Maschera (2015).

In 2008 he began collaborating with the Accademia del Teatro alla Scala as a professor and Principal Conductor in the Orchestra Professor program. In 2009 he made his debut at the Teatro San Carlo in Naples and conducted Tosca at the Teatro Greco in Pompeii.

He subsequently conducted The Barber of Seville at the Kaliningrad Opera with staging by Damiano Michieletto, and Mefistofele at the Teatro Regio in Parma. He has served as assistant to Yuri Temirkanov and Fabio Luisi in numerous symphonic concerts.

In 2015 he debuted at the Zürich Opera House conducting Il Matrimonio Segreto and at the Royal Opera House of Muscat with Falstaff.

He is a regular guest conductor with numerous symphonic orchestras, including the RAI National Symphony Orchestra of Turin (opening concert for the celebrations of the 150th anniversary of Italian unification), the OSI (Orchestra della Svizzera Italiana), the Pomeriggi Musicali Symphony Orchestra of Milan, the Borusan Istanbul Philharmonic Orchestra, I Virtuosi Italiani at the Verona Arena, and many others.

He made his debut at Teatro alla Scala in the 2016–17 season, substituting for Maestro Fabio Luisi in L’Elisir d’Amoredirected by Grisha Asagaroff. In the same season, he conducted Suor Angelica and Gianni Schicchi in Hong Kong.

He later served as assistant and substitute conductor to Fabio Luisi at the Opéra Bastille in Paris in Falstaff and Simon Boccanegra.

Among his recent engagements are La Cenerentola, The Barber of Seville, and L’Elisir d’Amore at Teatro alla Scala with the Accademia Orchestra, Un Ballo in Maschera and Luisa Miller at the Opéra of Rennes, Nantes, and Angers, and Robin Hood (world premiere) by Michele Dall’Ongaro at the Teatro Petruzzelli in Bari.
