mdi ensemble was born in Milan in 2002. In 2017 it was awarded the “A life in music” prize from the Teatro alla Fenice in Venice and in 2021 the Franco Abbiati Prize dedicated to Mario Messinis.
Since its inception, the ensemble has collaborated with some of the greatest living composers and is a regular guest of the most important musical institutions including the Festival Milano Musica, Biennale Musica Venezia, Società del Quartetto di Milano, Bologna Festival, Mito-Settembre Musica, Ravenna Festival, Festival dei Due Mondi, Festival Transart, Festival Présences di Radio France, Festival Jeunesse di Vienna, ORF di Innsbruck, Villa Concordia a Bamberg, SWR di Stoccarda, SMC di Losanna, LACMA di Los Angeles, Chelsea Music Festival di New York.
It has collaborated with directors such as Marco Angius, Stefan Asbury, Robert HP Platz, Emilio Pomarico, Yoichi Sugiyama, Pierre-André Valade.
Since 2016 it has been organizing the “Sound of Wander” concert and masterclass review in Milan.
Since 2019 it has also been the promoter of Newmusic Week, an international workshop of contemporary instrumental composition and practice (in collaboration with the Roman Philharmonic Academy and Villa Vigoni – Italian-German Center for European Dialogue).
It has recorded CDs dedicated to Simone Movio, Mauro Lanza and Andrea Valle, Marco Momi, Giovanni Verrando, Misato Mochizuki, Emanuele Casale, Sylvano Bussotti, Stefano Gervasoni, Simone Movio. The DVD See the Sound – Homage to Helmut Lachenmann was broadcast by Rai 5 and Sky Classica.
