VENUES / SALA DI MANTO

The Sala di Manto constitutes the sumptuous entrance to the Great Apartment of Castello. The space resulted from the fusion of different environments, unified by the construction of the deep square coffered ceiling, based on a project by Giovan Battista Bertani started around 1572. The wall decorations, made by the painter Lorenzo Costa the Younger in the oil on wall technique, are framed by pilasters and stucco panels.

Sala di Manto, as the name implies, is mainly dedicated to the celebration of the mythical founder of the city. The construction of the city of Mantua must have seemed a particularly appropriate theme for a room intended for official ceremonies.

Starting from the eastern wall, three scenes relating to the legendary myth can be read clockwise: the Landing of Manto, the Banquet of Manto and Ocno founding the city; the erection of the city gates (Leona, Pradella, Mulina) and two final compartments unfortunately difficult to interpret due to the state of conservation follow in three panels. The story ideally continued in the following rooms, dedicated to the exploits of the Gonzaga house.
